Lake Eyasi & Lake Natron
Ol Donyo Lengai
This stunning mountain is an active volcano on the southern shore of Lake Natron, in a very remote location within the greater Ngorongoro Area. It is sacred to the Maasai who live here.
Ol Donyo Lengai still erupts occasionally, and the ragged top of the cone may look different after a stronger eruption. It is a tough, long and dusty drive on bumpy roads to get there. You start climbing up the volcano around midnight and reach the summit as the sun rises – this is a real “off the beaten track” experience and all the more thrilling because of it.
