The Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa – four times the size of the more famous Serengeti. The Selous has plenty to offer - hot volcanic springs, a number of beautiful lakes scattered across it, plains, woodlands, swamps, flood plains, sand rivers, oxbow lakes and, of course, the incredible Rufiji River.
Selous is famous for its elephant, hippo and although rarely observed, some rhino, as well as buffalo and a great number of large antelopes. It also contains about one third of the world’s wild dogs.
During the dry season from June to October, there is an astonishing concentration of animals along the river as well as the ancient migration of elephants that takes place between the Selous and Mozambique's Niassa Game Reserves. It is estimated that 64,400 elephants roam the two parks, with 84% on the Tanzanian side.
Selous Game Reserve is vast, remote and wild – just the kind of place we love sending our guests.
