Day 1
Arrive Kigali – visit Genocide Museum – Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge
Today, your own flight arrives in Kigali at time TBA. A driver will be waiting at the airport to meet you and take you to the Genocide Museum where you spend the morning exploring the museum. After lunch in town, you make your way towards your lodge.

The roads are good and the journey to Ruhengeri will take approximately 2.5 hours with majestic views across the five peaks of Volcanoes National Park. On arrival settle in to your room and relax at the lodge in preparation for your gorilla trek the next day.

The Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is a relatively new mid-range lodge in the area and is perfectly situated for gorilla tracking. The 30 individual cottages have been built on 4 acres of land on the slopes of Mt Sabinyo. Each of the stone and thatch cottages have ensuite facilities, a small lounge with a fire place and a private veranda. The cottages are of a good size and are well positioned to give them privacy from each other. There is a separate restaurant and bar area where meals are served to the guests. Mountain Gorilla View Lodge provides good value for money at the same time as great views and easy access to Parc National des Volcans.

Located very close (about 15 minutes) from the main headquarters of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park (Parc National de Volcans), this is a very handy base from which to explore the area and organise treks to see the Golden monkeys and, of course, the mountain gorillas. This is a great location with superb views of the volcanoes.

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge has been designed and built by Governors’ Camp, but it is owned by a community trust called SACOLA. Governors’ Camp leases the lodge from SACOLA, who will use the income to finance its socio-economic development and conservation objectives in the area, which include water projects, education, health and informal industries. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is therefore and exciting combination of a top quality lodge and a power for driving socio-economic development and conservation in the area.

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is situated on the edge of the Parc National des Volcans in North Western Rwanda, at an altitude of over 8,000 ft (over 2,300 m). The rainforests of the 5 Virunga Volcanoes are the last refuge of the Mountain Gorilla. The lush slopes of the volcanoes provide an appropriately dramatic natural setting for what is perhaps the most poignant and thrilling wildlife experience to be had anywhere.

Roughly half of the world’s wild population of Mountain Gorilla’s is resident on the Rwandan slopes of the Virungas. Gorilla trekking, which can be strenuous, is not the only activity on offer. Sabyinyo Silverback lodge provides the perfect base from which to explore this fascinating corner of Africa. Visits to the bustling nearby market town of Ruhengeri, beautiful lakes, the genocide memorials or the community and conservation projects are designed for you to take maximum advantage of this unique area, its wildlife and its culture.

Day 2
Gorilla Trek – afternoon leisure – Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge
An early breakfast, served at the lodge, before departing by road to the Parc National des Volcans headquarters. Here you will be allocated a guide for one of the habituated Mountain Gorilla families and given a safety briefing. You will then be taken by vehicle to a starting point, to commence your gorilla trek in the forest. The amount of time spent walking is dependent upon which family of Gorillas you are allocated to and where they are to be found on that day. Once the family is sighted you will spend a maximum of one hour with the Gorilla family. After this phenomenal wildlife experience, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 Golden Monkey Trek – afternoon transfer to Kigali Serena
This morning you embark on your Golden Monkey Trek. Trekking to see the golden monkeys is another highlight of Volcanoes National Park. The Golden Monkey is endemic to the high altitude forests of the Volcanoes National Park area. The monkeys are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or frolicking on the forest floor.

After lunch at the lodge, you will have a transfer waiting to take you to the Kigali Serena Hotel where you enjoy dinner and rest for the evening.

The Kigali Serena Hotel is a good mid range option for stopping over before or after your gorilla trek. Complete with swimming pool, bars, and restaurants, this is a more mass market but very well equipped hotel to stay for the evening.
