Our ‘not to be missed’ recommendations for your holiday
Water activities
What better way to wind down and reflect on your safari than in the tranquillity of an unspoilt beach destination; endless white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and a warm breeze drifting off the Indian Ocean.
Explore diverse coral reefs or snorkel off deserted white sandbanks and into turquoise sea, and sleep in mobile eco fly-camps on uninhabited tropical islands. Or combine sea kayaking with dhow sailing up wide coastal river mouths, teeming with red listed bird species and pristine mangrove forests.
Benguerra Island
The second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, and ideally located off the coast near Vilanculos. Most famous as a diving destination, as it is home to established coral reefs with a rich array of tropical fish as well as whales, dolphins, sea turtles – and most importantly the endangered Dugong.
Beach lovers will find an idyllic hideaway as it offers pristine beaches, a warm ocean rich in wildlife, and the silence characteristic of a remote tropical island. Lodging choices are few; we think you will love this island if you are looking for the ultimate ‘barefoot luxury’ experience!
Quirimbas Archipelago
Located in northern Mozambique the Quirimbas Archipelago is accessible by air from Dar es Salaam, making it the perfect extension to a Tanzanian safari. It consists of over 50 coral islands and having been granted national park status, its rich coral reefs offer some of the best diving and snorkeling in Africa.

Vamizi Island
Vamizi Island, Mozambique
Vamizi Island is a sanctuary, small and intimate, offering the definitive barefoot luxury of your own private island. Just 12 kilometres long and 1 kilometre wide, it is fringed with gently-shelving beaches and calm waters and is a haven for adults and children alike, with miles of unpadded white sand waiting to be explored.
Six individually designed luxury villas are scattered along the edge of the idyllic Vamizi Island. We find this a very expensive option that will only work well for small groups or families looking for private beach luxury.
